7 Benefits of Microneedling - Is This Advanced Skincare Worth the Hype?

Microneedling is an advanced skincare treatment that involves the use of multiple tiny sterile needles to create small wound channels in the outer layer of skin, called the epidermis. Keep reading to find out how it works, the potential benefits of microneedling, the potential side effects and if it could be the skin treatment for you.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling treatments use tiny sterile needles to puncture the skin to create small wound channels. These small wounds encourage the production of collagen and help with absorption of skincare products. This is done with either a manual derma roller or an electric microneedling pen. At Crybaby Clinic we use a microneedling pen in our treatments as they offer deeper needle lengths for more effective treatments.

Benefits of Microneedling

Facial Rejuvenation - The increase in collagen and elastin can help to tighten skin, reduce signs of ageing, smooth fine lines and improve skin luminosity.

Improve Acne - Microneedling can be highly effective for those with acne. Scars from previous outbreaks can be reduced and skincare products will be more easily absorbed increasing their effectiveness.

Reduce Scars - Microneedling can work well to reduce both raised (hypertrophic) and sunken (atrophic) scar tissue. The treatments helps to break down old scar tissue and promotes the formation of new skin cells which over time can reduce the appearance of scars.

Reduce Enlarged pores - Over multiple Microneedling treatments improvements can be made to skin texture reducing the appliance of enlarged pores, especially on the cheeks, chin and nose.

Improve Stretch Marks - Stretch marks are formed when the collagen and elastin matrix is stretched out of alignment due to rapid expansion of the skin. This normal process can result in silver, pink or red marks that contain little collagen. Microneedling stretch marks stimulates collagen and elastin to rebuild in the area. Stretch marks can take a multiple sessions and time to see results.

Improve Hyperpigmentation - Hyper-pigmentation or sun damage can be improved. The newly produced collagen helps to repair and restore skin.

Improve Rosacea - The use of microneedling to benefit Rosacea is relatively recent but shows promising results. The expansion of blood vessels, which cause the redness, are due to a weakening of the connective tissue between the vessels. Microneedling promotes collagen and elastin production in the area as well as improving related scar tissue. Microneedling cannot not be done on clients with pustular or nodular rosacea.

How Microneedling Works?

When the needles enter your skin they create tiny channels that increase blood flow to the area and encourage the production of collagen and elastin. Collagen is the main protein found in the dermis layer of your skin and is responsible for maintaining skins elasticity and hydration levels. Elastin help to keep skin firm. Both of these are key ingredients to healthy, youthful skin that glows!

As part of your treatment we also introduce a Hyaluronic Acid serum to boost your skins hydration levels.

Side effects of microneedling treatment

Generally people find microneedling a fairly comfortable treatment with minimal side effects afterwards and great results with the proper aftercare. Redness, dry skin, mild itching and bruising are all common side effects in the first 24-28 hours. Following your aftercare these will be easily managed at home.

Before starting your microneedling treatment at Crybaby Clinic we will talk you through all the potential side effects and you’ll be required to signed a consent form before we proceed. In your consultation you’ll be able to ask us any questions for your total peace of mind.

Who isn’t suitable for microneedling?

Microneedling is a great option but there are some restrictions on who it is suitable for.

Active Acne - Although microneedling helps to improve acne scarring and the effectiveness of targeted skin care it is not suitable for those with current acne outbreaks. It would be possible to spread the acne further with the microneedling and create new or worsened outbreaks.

Accutane - People who are currently using or have used Accutane in the last 6 months will not be suitable for microneedling. This is due to the increased risk of scarring. Book in for after 6 months since your treatment ended.

Prone to Keloid Scarring - People prone to Keloid scarring are not suitable for microneedling as the treatment breaks the skin. This can cause new Keloid scars to form.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding - As this treatment breaks the skin barrier you will need to wait until your baby is born and/or until you stop nursing. This is to avoid the risk of an infection or anything being passed to your baby.

Taking antibiotics - Please wait until after you finish your course and your body has chance to recover. Microneedling creates small traumas to the skin and you’ll want to give your immune system the best chance to resolve any other issues first.

Retinoids & Vitamin C Serums - Please do not use any retinols or vitamin serums 5-7 days before (or after) your treatment.

Recent aesthetic treatment - If you’ve had dermal fillers or anti wrinkle treatment please wait 2 week before booking your microneedling treatment. Your aesthetic treatments need time to heal and settle before starting a different treatment.

Although we understand it can be frustrating when you’re asked to wait to book a treatment or consider an alternative your safety is paramount to Crybaby Clinic and we will only proceed with a treatment when it is safe to do so.

Conclusion: Should Microneedling be your next go to skincare treatment?

Microneedling is an effective advanced skincare treatment for many skin conditions including: acne, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and improving skin texture. It is a great alternative for those wanting to try a less invasive treatment before heavily investing in laser or surgical procedures.

Most people find the treatment only a little uncomfortable and it is a mostly low risk procedure. When you book with Crybaby Clinic we will provide you with all the pros and cons so you can make a confident and informed choice about your treatment.
